WHat is the old Paradigm?
The old paradigm according to Shepard:
- uses traditional, objective testing
- evaluative feedback- compares students against each other
- learning is sequenced and heirarchical and explicitly taught
- motivation is external
WHat is the new paradigm?
In the new paradigm:
- we use more informative assessment- checking to see what they've learned, how to improve and what next
- the student is more involved- self and peer assessments
- we create goals for student learning and moving forward from descriptive feedback
How does this effect assessment in art education?
For this to work in art education there needs to be a focus on self and peer assessments. The students are critiqued by others and themselves. This critique should always be up for debate and the students should be able to defend or rework their art accordingly. This results in heightened participation, passion, and accountability in the students.
